Inspiring Action, One Word at a Time
I’ve always been passionate about using writing to empower people and connect them to the democratic process. Whether through an op-ed in the Salt Lake Tribune, a curated newsletter series for the Better Utah Institute, or crafting civic actions for Action Utah, my work has focused on inspiring participation and making democracy more accessible. These examples highlight my belief in the power of clear, engaging writing to drive meaningful change.
The Challenges
The ongoing challenge is engaging audiences who feel disconnected from democracy and unsure of how to participate meaningfully.
Through writing persuasive op-eds, informative newsletters, and actionable campaigns I’ve worked to bridge the gap between apathy and action.
By crafting clear, accessible, and engaging content, I have aimed to empower individuals to see their role in shaping their communities and tried to inspire them to take tangible steps toward civic engagement.
Solutions
Op-Ed: 'Time to Become a Super Fan of Democracy in Utah'
In this Salt Lake Tribune op-ed, I inspired Utahns to view democracy as a team sport, encouraging active participation rather than passive observation. I provided actionable steps like contacting lawmakers, attending public meetings, and engaging in redistricting efforts, while offering resources to make civic participation accessible and impactful.
Bits & Bytes
I curated and wrote this newsletter to provide civic-minded readers with insights into democracy and inspire action in their communities. Originally a weekly series, it transitioned to a monthly bulletin designed to showcase what civic engagement can look like. I managed all aspects of the newsletter, from crafting messaging and curating content to designing headers and building it in Action Kit, reaching thousands of subscribers with each issue.
Civic Actions via Action Network (for Action Utah):
As part of my work with Action Utah, I wrote and created civic actions to empower individuals to engage with their representatives and communities. Using the Action Network platform, I crafted clear, persuasive calls to action that encouraged people to contact lawmakers, attend town halls, and sign petitions. These actions were designed to make participation straightforward and impactful, helping individuals see the power of their voice in shaping local government.
The Outcome
Writing has always been a way for me to drive action and connect people to the democratic process. Whether it’s an op-ed in a major publication, a newsletter that informs and inspires, or civic actions that empower communities to take a stand, I’m passionate about using my skills to create meaningful change. These projects reflect my commitment to making democracy accessible and showing people how their voices truly matter.
